Inertia - physics :
"A property of matter by which something that is not moving remains still and something that is moving goes at the same speed and in the same direction until another thing or force affects it."
It's interesting how the physical laws of the Universe also apply to the non-tangible elements of our lives. Inertia states that a body at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by some outside force. Have you ever noticed that principle in your own life? You go to work day after day, follow the same routine, and you do so wondering how it will change. The truth is, it won't. Not unless you apply some pressure to your routine, put something in motion that counter-acts the direction you're going. Or perhaps it's a lack of direction at all. If you feel you aren't moving or going anywhere you're going to stay that way... unless you do something about it. It's a law of the Universe.
The reverse is also true. Once you start moving in a new direction, you're going to keep going that way until you do something to make it stop. If you start taking steps toward your dream, let's say of being a professional singer, you'll keep going unless you allow something in that is going to halt your momentum. Momentum is what keeps a physical body in motion, but it's also what keeps our lives in motion.
If you have taken a step towards making positive changes in your life first of all congratulate yourself on the energy and courage that took. And now allow yourself to soak in the comfort that you can keep going, and you will keep going, so long as you want to. If something gets in your way, if old patterns halt your progress, gently yet effectively push past them. It may be hard at first and require a lot of energy. But imagine what it's like when you push on a door and it suddenly gives way. All the built up force causes you to FLY through the doorway. You couldn't stop if you tried, you just plummet through and into the room.
The effort you put into overcoming obstacles will only create more force to push you in the direction you desire to go. Obstacles are frustrating, but they build strength, and once you break through them, you are that much stronger and going that much faster in your desired direction.
What step can you take today to build momentum in the direction you desire? And remember, not all steps are action oriented. Some of the most important things we do involve stopping, halting a path or way of life we no longer wish to engage with. In order to reverse directions you first have to stop going the way you're going.
